Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Many men who seek erectile dysfunction treatments, cannot access new and innovation treatments due to their regional location.

Verve Men’s Clinic are proud to be Regional Queensland’s first dedicated men’s health facility to offer Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (also known as PRP).

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (or PRP) uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets and has been used to treat several types of common conditions such as torn ligaments and tendons, strained muscles, and osteoarthritis. New applications are being developed, including in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

How does it work?

Platelet-rich plasma consists of two elements: plasma, or the liquid portion of blood, and platelets, a type of blood cell that plays an important role in healing throughout the body.

They do this by releasing growth factors, which are bioactive proteins that initiate connective tissue healing and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, and stimulate the healing process.

The aim of PRP for erectile dysfunction is to help repair and regenerate the nerves and blood vessels that may not be working as they should and leading to poor erectile function.

FAQs

WHERE DOES THE PLATELET-RICH PLASMA COME FROM?

To create platelet-rich plasma, the doctor will take your blood and place it into a device called a centrifuge that rapidly spins the sample, separating out the other components of the blood from the platelets.

The plasma and platelets are then extracted and activated before being readministered into your penis.

HOW IS PRP INJECTED?

Before injection, the doctor will apply a numbing cream to the area of the penis to be injected.  This will help alleviate any pain during the injection. Your Verve Specialist Doctor will then inject the platelet-rich plasma into the spongy part of your penis.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Most men do not suffer significant side effects, but they can include discomfort, swelling and bruising, infection, allergic reaction, and very rarely nerve or vascular injury.

IS PRP EFFECTIVE?

PRP is not suitable for all men, and your Verve Specialist Doctor will discuss whether they think it could help you.

Many studies have shown that PRP can be an effective way to alleviate erectile dysfunction. In one study, patients were divided into 2 groups. One group was injected with PRP, while the other was injected with a saline solution. In the group who received PRP, 69% noticed improved erections, compared to 27% in the group that received only saline.

We have linked these studies below, should you wish to read further.

Every patient is unique and results may vary. Invasive procedures carry risks which need to be discussed with your doctor to ensure you are fully informed and realistic outcomes have been explained. We recommend seeking a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner for all medical procedures.
