Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that affects many men at some point in their lives. Erectile dysfunction can occur for various reasons, including physical and psychological factors. In some cases, erectile dysfunction can be treated with medication or lifestyle changes, but many men may require more intensive treatment options. Enter Intracavernosal Injections (ICI): a safe and effective option for treating erectile dysfunction.
What Are Intracavernosal Injections?
Simply put, an Intracavernosal Injection is a medication that is injected directly into the penis to help achieve and maintain an erection. The medication used in an Intracavernosal Injection is called alprostadil, a vasodilator that helps to relax the smooth muscles in the penis, which in turn allows for increased blood flow and an erection. However if a patient does not respond to alprostadil, we also use Bimix (papaverine + phentolamine), or Trimix (papaverine + phentolamine + alprostadil).
Alprostadil is a synthetic version of prostaglandin E1, which is a naturally occurring chemical in the body that plays a role in the regulation of blood flow and the relaxation of smooth muscle.
Intracavernosal Injection (ICI) treatment involves the use of a small needle that is inserted into the side of the penis, and the medication is injected into the corpora cavernosa, which are the two chambers that run the length of the penis and fill with blood during an erection. The needle used in an Intracavernosal Injection is very small, and most men report minimal discomfort during the injection process.
Intracavernosal Injections (ICI) treatment is typically prescribed for men who have not responded to other treatments for erectile dysfunction, such as oral medications like Viagra or Cialis. Intracavernosal Injections treatment can also be a good option for men who are not able to take oral medications due to other health issues or medication interactions.
In addition, Intracavernosal Injections treatment can be a good option for men who have had prostate surgery or radiation therapy, as these treatments can often cause erectile dysfunction.
One of the benefits of an Intracavernosal Injection treatment is that it can be customised to each individual patient’s needs. The dose of medication used in an Intracavernosal Injections can be adjusted based on the patient’s response and tolerance, which allows for personalised treatment plans. In addition, Intracavernosal Injections (ICI) treatment can be used in conjunction with other treatments for erectile dysfunction, such as penile pumps or penile implants.
