Why is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy important for men?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is often associated with women’s health, particularly for conditions like urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. However, it’s equally important for men, although perhaps less recognised. The pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in men’s health, supporting the bladder, bowel, and sexual function.

What is a Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor muscles, a group of muscles situated at the base of the pelvis, are vital for men’s overall health and well-being. These muscles play a multifaceted role in supporting urinary and bowel continence, sexual function, and providing stability to the pelvic organs.

For men, issues related to the pelvic floor can manifest in various ways, ranging from urinary and fecal incontinence to erectile dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Conditions such as prostate surgery, chronic constipation, pelvic trauma, or even excessive straining during heavy lifting or high-impact sports can contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction in men.

Every patient is unique and results may vary. Invasive procedures carry risks which need to be discussed with your doctor to ensure you are fully informed and realistic outcomes have been explained. We recommend seeking a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner for all medical procedures.
