What are Intracavernosal Injections?

Intracavernosal injections (ICI), also known as penile injections or penile self-injection therapy, are a form of treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). This therapy involves injecting medication directly into the penis to produce an erection.

Intracavernosal injections have been used successfully for many years and can be an effective option for individuals who do not respond to oral medications or are unable to take them.

How effective are ICIs?

Intracavernosal injections have a high success rate and have been reported to be effective in producing erections in up to 80-90% of men, even those who have not responded to other forms of treatment.

ICI have quick onset of action in that the medication typically produces an erection within 5 to 20 minutes after administration.

Intracavernosal injections are reliable and predictable and the response to them is usually consistent, providing a reliable option for sexual activity.

FAQs

HOW DO ICIs WORK?

Intracavernosal injections work by delivering medication directly into the erectile tissues of the penis. At Verve Men’s Clinic, we initially prescribe alprostadil, a vasodilator that relaxes the smooth muscles in the penis, allowing increased blood flow and promoting an erection.

However if a patient does not respond to alprostadil, we also use Bimix (papaverine + phentolamine), or Trimix (papaverine + phentolamine + alprostadil).

The effectiveness of intracavernosal injections may vary from person to person. Some individuals may experience better results than others. The Verve Doctors will discuss this with you at your initial consultation.

Patients at Verve Men’s Clinic are trained by our Specialist Doctors to administer the medical themselves – see next section for more information.

HOW ARE ICIs ADMINISTERED?

ICI treatment involves self-administration of the medication into the shaft of the penis using a fine needle and a syringe. Prior to administration, it is essential to clean the injection site with an alcohol swab to reduce the risk of infection. The medication is then injected into one of the corpus cavernosum, the sponge-like structures that fill with blood during an erection.

HOW DO I LEARN HOW TO ADMINISTER ICIs?

Medical supervision is recommended to undergo proper training and instruction from a healthcare professional on how to administer intracavernosal injections correctly.

At Verve Men’s Clinic, either Dr Jonny or Dr Philippe will show you how to administer the injections which have a high success rate.

HOW MUCH ALPROSTADIL WILL I REQUIRE?

This will be determined during your consultation with our doctors, taking into consideration the severity of your erectile dysfunction and the likely underlying causes.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS?

Like most medical procedures, there is a risk of side effects after the treatment.

Common side effects include penile pain, bruising, or clotted blood at the injection site.

Long term use can also lead to scarring and bending of the penis. Rarely, patients can get prolonged, unwanted erections called priapism. If an erection last more than 4 hours, patients should seek urgent medical attention at their local emergency department.

We encourage prospective patients to read this information guide.

HOW MUCH DOES ICI COST?

At Verve Men’s Clinic, we charge $195 for an initial consultation with our GP and $280 for an initial consultation with our Urologist. At this appointment, your doctor will assess your unique health needs and history, before deciding on a course of treatment.

If you are suitable for ICI treatment, you will pay $350 for an initial trainging session with one of our doctors. Your treatments and consultation appointments are all medicare-billable.

If you have a valid medicare card, appointments shall attract a rebate of $84.15 or $42.30 for our Urologist, $82.90/$122.15 for our GP. ICI injections also offer an additional rebate of $51.30 for training.

All consumables can be picked up from your local pharmacy by using the prescription issued to you at your initial consultation.

At present, there is a worldwide shortage of Caverject. We are therefore issuing prescriptions for patients to a compounding pharmacy which can be arranged by our clinic for $198 (incl GST) and includes all necessary consumables.

ICI is a cost-effective option for men, as our Doctors teach their patients how to administer the injections themselves, eliminating the need for multiple appointments.

Every patient is unique and results may vary. Invasive procedures carry risks which need to be discussed with your doctor to ensure you are fully informed and realistic outcomes have been explained.
